According to an African American Wellness Project study only 1 in 3 Black Americans who need mental health care receive it. However, even those with partial insurance coverage expressed concerns about being able to afford to continue to experience mental health support.
Coupled with the financial barrier to seeking mental health support, BIPOC individuals have very few options when choosing a mental health provider who can embody their unique lived experiences. In fact, according to a study published by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2020, less than 5% of mental-health providers were Black. Asian providers made up about 4%, as did Hispanic providers. As the APA points out, the racial breakdown of providers does not reflect the makeup of the U.S., which poses a problem.
Sad Girls Club’s Remedy program will be a catalyst for communities of color who can't afford culturally aligned talk therapy.
Remedy’s impact so far!
Since launching Remedy in Fall 2022, we received over 900 applications for the program and we’ve been able to grant 504 sessions of free therapy to 21 grantees.
With every $2,500 raised, we’re able to provide 1 member of our Remedy community with one full year of therapy completely free of charge.
“I just want to start by saying thank you again to you and the entire team for even offering this support. I don't know where I'd be mentally and emotionally, if I hadn't gotten this scholarship and been able to continue this lifelong healing journey with my therapist.”
— Michaela, Remedy grantee
“I think this is a great opportunity for those that may not have the resources and even for those who are intimidated by the idea of therapy. This gives the safe space for people to explore their options or even know that they have any”
— Jaylah, Remedy grantee

We’re partnering with Open Path Psychotherapy Collective to expand our therapy scholarship to be even more accessible to the Sad Girls Club community. Because everyone deserves support and healing.
Open Path is a nonprofit dedicated to providing transformative and affordable mental health care for only $30-70 per session to clients in need. This means we’re able to stretch our budget and provide twice as many therapy scholarships to our low-income community members.
