How To Actually Rest During The Holiday

Because really, no one’s going to do it for ya.

We all know that rest is an essential part of living well. Rest increases our productivity and helps us avoid burnout. But how often do we actually prioritize it, schedule it in, or create the proper space to have it? Ah, thought so. Here, I’ll be sharing a few of my tactics with you, so that the world of rest becomes more of an invitation to a relaxing party (for one), than a boring to-do.

Pretend You’re Sick

Ask yourself: How did your mum look after you as a child when you were ill? Emulate that. How does your significant other / friend / caregiver look after you when you have the flu? Offer that to yourself. Be the support you need in the worst AND best of times. Do not reserve your self care for when things get dire - make it a practice to be delicate with yourself on a regular basis, and for no other reason than it just makes you feel damn good. Put on some cozy loungewear, eat some chicken soup and watch Grace & Frankie (or whatever turns you on).

Take Social Media Breaks

Unless you have a healthy relationship with social media, (in which case, can we talk?!) I recommend you selectively delete Instagram, Gmail or whatever app drains the most of your time. Recently, I’ve made a habit of deleting Instagram off my phone during mercury retrogrades and Sundays. Having time away from seductive screen-traps is a form of built-in rest for both your mental and your emotional hygiene. This also allows you to make room for deeper connections with the world around you and help keep you in the present moment.

Be Still

How alluring is the concept of being still? But in reality, it’s incredibly difficult to grasp when you’re always on the go. If you’re anything like me, you’ll benefit from trying a weighted blanket. Weighted blankets can improve sleep, calm anxiety and relieve restlessness. The deep pressure provided by the blanket feels like a warm hug, and can even emulate the feeling of being swaddled or spooned. They’re a tangible, physical solution to getting grounded and securing you in one place while you relax.

Close Your Eyes

Eye pillows are the shit. Not only do they literally shut out the bustling, holiday-frazzled world on the outside, but they also help your nervous system chill out. The light pressure that an eye pillow provides once you place it on the eyelids, helps stimulates the vagus nerve, which is basically the superstar for rest. It also regulates our heart rate, digestion of food and even our mood. Place one over your eyes or even on your forehead when you lay down to sleep, nap, vibing to music or when you just need a moment.

Soothe Your Senses

Gently engaging (but not overstimulating) your senses can work wonders for unwinding. Listen to a relaxing audiobook in bed. Dim the lights - I like to add a moody salt lamp or glowy candle to my space. Inhale some lavender essential oil (you can diffuse or put a drop on your pillow). Brew some digestive tea. Sip the day away.
