Your Sad Girl May ✨Tarotscopes✨

Sophia Somerville.

for Mental Health Awareness Month.

This month we are using the archetypes and lessons in Tarot to illuminate the different mental states we move through, and how we might approach them in new ways. The energy of Taurus season has our feet firmly planted, ready to hit the ground running and grind. Don’t let the hustle limit your self-care at this time. When things ramp up at work or socially, it’s especially imperative that you check in with your internal state, and how you are treating yourself. Any time you feel consumed by chaos of your thoughts, call upon the grounded, sensual aspects of Taurean energy to bring you back into your body. Reacquaint your mind with the earthly vessel that it’s housed within. This time is all about moving steadily, observing often and tending to your mental garden with patience and precision.

Be open to seeing things from a different perspective this month, honeys.

Here are your Mental Health Tarotscopes for May. I have pulled a card for each sign. Read for your sun, moon and rising signs, if you know all three. Take what resonates and trash the rest. I have used the Rider-Waite-Smith deck for this reading.

ARIES: Ace of Cups

A new horizon meets you, and your heart rejoices. Your head may be muttering ‘this is a trick’ or ‘it’s too good to be true’ but take any rising paranoia with a grain of salt. When we get a hint of what we’ve been praying for, our sense of hope can start to dwindle or seem daft. Let in what wants to greet you. Let in the blessings that are knocking at your door. The glimmerings of new love need room and attention to grow. Give yourself a chance to accept the good this month. Allow your heart flex to its purest content.

TAURUS: Two of Wands

Doubting your creative potential is a recipe for wasted time. While it isn’t necessarily a good time to launch yourself into a new creative project or force yourself into self-promotion, it’s important you don’t abandon your ideas this month. Let yourself vision and create from a place of love and freedom. What delights you? Who are you curious about? Where do you feel most comfortable visioning, dreaming, planning? Go there. By spending time with your ideas, you legitimise your creative process, and flesh out something worth your time.

GEMINI: Two of Pentacles

This time reeks of decision paralysis.  As multiple options compete for your attention, a material choice begs to be made. Maybe a past version of your current circumstance is haunting your ability to commit to a path. Perhaps you’re caught in black-and-white thinking or over-analysing potential outcomes. Wherever you are this month, remove yourself from old mental loops. Easier said than done I know, but the key is noticing what you’re stuck in. The more you can realise where you are now and let go of who you were then, the easier you can see the forest from the trees. Also: at a certain point, any choice is the right choice. Know when to put yourself out of your misery.

CANCER: Five of Swords

You’re on the verge of a massive up-level. What this means is that some sort of soul growth is imminent, a breakthrough is in progress. The way this can affect our nervous systems however, can make us think the opposite is occurring. When we are about to expand, our internal security system, designed to keep us safe, contracts in an effort to maintain that safety and sameness. This can often manifest as self-sabotage, self-betrayal, or any other kind of inner contraction. Draw upon the memory of a time in which you grew in some way, and what it felt like to be on the other side of it (eg. a school graduation, first kiss or relationship, a time you said no). Conjure this memory and remind yourself that it’s worth breathing through the discomfort. What you’re feeling is a sign of expansion.

LEO: The Star

Last month knocked you around a bit, Leo. Most of it for good reason – you are becoming more and more visible! – but draining nonetheless. This month offers some respite in the form of alternative modes of healing. Have you been seeking spiritual mentorship, or getting curious about acupuncture? Are you craving a listening ear, a helping hand, a caring heart? Open yourself up to receive these things in alternative contexts. ‘Healing’ doesn’t always have to require a shit-tonne of money, just as self-care doesn’t always have to involve expensive bath bombs. Sometimes the most profoundly restorative experiences are the simplest. Hearing pure, unadulterated silence. Reading a book without interruption. Receiving a thoughtful text from a friend. Put yourself in the way of the people, places, books and practitioners that make you feel safe, seen and hopeful. It is rare and precious to be understood.

VIRGO: Knight of Wands

Give yourself permission to loosen your grip this month. In order to get things done, tick things off the list and keep things immaculate, you often tend towards denying your need for free, unstructured time. Sometimes, the most productive thing is to put down your list and gift yourself an hour to do whatever you want with. Notice what this prospect brings up in you, sweet Virgo – is it dread, eye-rolls, guilt? Your reaction points to where your attention needs to go; what area in your body/mind/life you need to breathe a bit of space into. Taurus season for you is all about uncapping the lid you’ve placed on your joy. Unbridling your enthusiasm for the frivolous and playful. You might be surprised at how truly productive it ends up feeling.

LIBRA: Queen of Pentacles

Your physical health is tied to your mental health. Period. You are being called to tend to your physical environment this month. Not because you are doing anything wrong or anything needs to be fixed – that is not the sentiment behind this nurturing Queen. Instead, how can you listen to your body as you would listen to a friend? It really is as simple, and deceptive, as that. Your relationship with your body is the focus, and how it manifests for you is entirely open – beauty and body image, relationship to food and cooking, grooming and hygiene, physical movement and fitness, ailments and illness, are just some of the areas this brings to mind. Don’t let the magnitude of what the body represents overwhelm you. Sit with yourself and listen to what feels the most resonant, and let that be your self-care theme for the month. Allow your body to communicate its needs to you around that particular area, and respond accordingly.

SCORPIO: Three of Cups

A paranoia to do with groups, rooted in a past experience, surfaces at this time. The fears around groupthink, group mentality and the like are so valid, and spending time with them will do you a world of good in terms of centring yourself in your lived experience. But it’s important to discern between a real and an imagined fear. Bottom line is, community connection is important to you, and it is possible for it to coexist with your fierce independence. If you already have a group or groups that you are part of, how can they support you right now, and how can you show up in a way that doesn’t curb your freedom? And if not, but there is a yearning there, call upon the imagined communities or groups that you would like to be part of. Conjure the elements that make them feel good and supportive and welcoming to you. There is such power in that. You can call upon the power of group support even when you are alone.

SAGITTARIUS: Nine of Pentacles

You’re probably going to hate me for prescribing this, but there’s really nothing better for you right now than a gratitude practice. This can look any which (or witch) way – it can be written, spoken, thought, delivered, exchanged with yourself or another person, and even recorded on your phone to listen back to. Don’t thank the things you think you should be thankful for – thank the things that you actually are glad about. You don’t have to thank your mother out of obligation. You’re allowed to thank your damn self for being cute. You’re permitted to being grateful for cancelled plans and empty beaches. When you take time to acknowledge the things that you genuinely appreciate, it breeds faith in the process of your life.

CAPRICORN: Ace of Wands

You’re experiencing a lull, and inspiration wants to get down with you. In the most general and abstract way possible, ask yourself: what are you horny for? Arousal can often feel like the antithesis to depression. It’s not that this card is suggesting you drown out depressive feelings with a wank (although masturbation is absolutely encouraged and can be one way out of a mental funk) because you don’t have to force anything, and I want to honour low libido as a natural part of the ebb and flow of a healthy sexuality. This ‘horniness’ relates to all things – what colours and clothes do you like? What music do you fuck with? What neighbourhood attracts you right now, where do you want to take a walk? What tv shows or art catch your attention, and what about them hooks you in? This month is all about getting specific about the things that give you life, so you can give yourself more of them without hesitation.

AQUARIUS: The Hanged Man

This is not a time to push. There’s a lot to process emotionally and mentally from the past few weeks, and your brain needs a minute to recalibrate. Sometimes life forces us to rest (whether it be through sickness, delay, or a change of plan) and at other times you are the one who has to intentionally pull back, and hang out for a bit. I have a hunch that things will rev up again (in a great way) very soon, so best to take advantage of any open space in your calendar to just, go, with, it. Resist the urge to fill the space. Sit in the uncomfortableness of surrendering a little bit of control. Trust life to flow without your constant input.

PISCES: Queen of Cups

This is the most Pisces card and I love that for you. Get in touch with your deepest feelings this month, in a way that doesn’t necessarily involve language. The part of you that simply feels, without putting a label on itself, wants to be given centre stage. Some forms this could take: breathwork, dance, yin yoga, self-massage, singing, drawing, meditation, crying. Google and youtube away if that’s your jam, or freestyle your own Queen of Cups expression. The idea is to give yourself permission to feel without needing to make sense of it or therapizing yourself. Feelings aren’t demons to be vanquished. They’re just feelings.
