Increasing Your Libido with Essential Oils

It’s more than just turning on a diffuser and taking deep breaths

Last month, The Atlantic reported that young people are in the midst of a “sex recession.” The article examines the generational and technological shifts that are causing this decline, such as the rise of dating apps, which have made approaching people in real life increasingly unheard of, and Internet porn, which has driven people to explore their own sexuality solo, instead of with a partner.

Energy healer Van Tan, who practices Pranic Healing, Energy Healing, Reiki, and the Millennium Method, offers a more psychic explanation: Perhaps the changes that we’re seeing in our society reflect how we’re really feeling inside.

“We have energy centers—these are the chakras,” she explains. “And in terms of sexuality, that’s the root chakra, which is linked to grounding, rooting, having your self-worth, having your deserving issues, being alive, being here,” she explains.

Keeping these emotional roots in mind, she created her Passion essential oil blend, which she infuses with Reiki energy. Created to balance tantric and sexual desires, act as an aphrodisiac, and promote grounding and alignment in the sacral and root chakras, it contains four essential oils: “Sage oil can increase or address your sexual issues, while neroli, cedarwood, and lavender oil cater to your emotions to make you feel good, relaxed, amazing, and confident,” she says.

Even if you don’t use her specific oil blends, she maintains that “all essential oils in general, especially the therapeutic-grade ones, have really high vibrational qualities, which assist in healing itself.” Other essential oils recommended by experts for increasing your sex drive include cinnamon, jasmine, rose, and sandalwood.

However, this prescription comes with a caveat: Inhaling or applying essential oils alone won’t magically get your juices flowing; to experience any real and lasting benefits, you need to explore the emotional issues lurking beneath your sexual disinterest.

“Emotions matter a lot. You have to fix that first. What triggers do you have? What traumas need to be addressed? You have to be at peace and you have to be okay with your issues,” she points out. “So the way essential oils work is by raising your frequency towards the right vibration that you want to be in. That will help fix your thought process.”

This is helpful advice, even for skeptics who are resistant to the notion that essential oils offer little benefit beyond the olfactory, or who have partners who’d rather purchase a new sex toy over a diffuser. Essential oils, Van says, are merely tools to help us tap into our innate ability to heal ourselves.

“If you want to be healed, you are the tool. With essential oils, these are just tangible things that you can take hold of in order to be reminded that you have love in your space. At the end of the day, it’s all placebo because the most powerful thing is your mind.”

Though Van’s stance is founded on spiritual principles, it does appear to be supported by science. Last November, The New York Times Magazine explored new research on the biochemical effects placebos have on the body and the quarter-century of evidence compiled to prove that they work. “Depression, back pain, chemotherapy-related malaise, migraine, post-traumatic stress disorder: The list of conditions that respond to placebos — as well as they do to drugs, with some patients — is long and growing,” writes Gary Greenberg.

At the very least, most people can appreciate the aromatherapeutic effects of essential oils—if you’re going to be using a humidifier this winter anyway, might as well add a few drops of sage oil and see how it works for you.
